Causes
Given that Autism is a spectrum of disorders, it is possible that there are multiple causes.
The specific causes of Autism, remain unknown to us.
Genetics
Researchers have observed structural and chemical differences in the brain of children with ASD as early as the flrst trimester's development of the fetus. It is very possible, that the disorder is genetically transmitted in families with the history of the disorder. Another possibility could be that exposure to vaccinations, which contain thimerosal and mercury based preservative, early in life may trigger the onset of the developmental disorder, since this may weaken the child's immune system.
Environment
Some data has also identified exposure to environmental toxins as a possible cause of the disorder, since certain regions have shown higher number of cases with autism.

Symptoms
The symptoms range from mild cognitive, social and behavioral deficits to more severe symptoms, which may provoke the onset of an intellectual difference. Some common characteristics of children with ASD are social isolation, lack of eye contact, poor language skills or delay of speech response, absence of empathy as well as difficulty understanding non verbal communication and obsession with their interests. In other words, autistic students have difficulty interacting with their peers, creating meaningful relationships, understanding social situations as well as other people’s perspectives. In addition, many of them could also experience the following: failure to engage in a back and forth conversation; looks through people, not aware of others; lack of pretend play, little or no imagination; does not show typical interest in, or play near, peers purposefully; lack of turn taking; unable to share pleasure; qualitative impairment in non-verbal communication; not pointing at an object to direct another person to look at it; lack of gaze monitoring; lack of initiation of activity or social play; unusual or repetitive hand and finger mannerisms; unusual reaction, or lack of reactions to sensory stimuli.
