As future teachers,
we need to be able to create a healthy, peaceful and nurturing environment for all students in the classroom. We should be able to present the material in an interesting and easy to understand way that will allow students to interact with each other while learning, not only from their teachers, but from their classmates’ perspectives as well. In addition, I believe that it is crucial for each student’s strengths and needs to be met individually, helping the ones that may struggle while also ensuring that the students who are ahead of the class stay interested and focused. In order to do that, we should first learn how to properly include exceptional students, who might have different needs and difficulties than their typical peers. As effective educators, we should be able to provide them with useful tips and strategies as well as engage them in various activities, which will help them succeed academically. Autism spectrum disorder is one of the most prevalent disorders in Canada and in the United States and I think that for that reason I must be prepared to educate autistic students and know how to use their full academic potential. I studied psychology in college and autism spiked my curiosity, since in the hospital where I volunteer, I often have to take care of children who have autism and before learning about this developmental difference, I was very confused as to how I could appropriately approach my patients. Having an autistic student in the classroom could be a great challenge, especially for someone who has not researched the topic or previously interacted with individuals diagnosed with it. This is why I decided to create this website to provide you with information on Autism Spectrum disorder types, causes, general symptoms and psychological explanations for them, as well as how to teach and properly include students with Autism in our classrooms.
